Gertrude Musyani | Zambia
Gertrude is an advocate of 21 years standing at the Zambian bar, which time she has spent in both private and in-house legal practice. She has been a corporate counsel in past 12 years and is current Head of the Legal Team at First National Bank Zambia (FNBZ), a wholly owned subsidiary bank of FirstRand Bank of South Africa. Prior to joining FNBZ, she worked as Senior Manager/Advocate at Zambia National Commercial Bank Plc, Zambia Development Agency, Corpus Legal Practitioners and National Legal Clinic for women, a Non-Governmental Organization.
Gertrude holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB) from the University of Zambia and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Herriot Watt University, Scotland. She is an Associate Arbitrator and Commissioner of the Small Claims Court. She is a member of the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) and was elected onto LAZ Council in 2016 and currently serving her second two-year term of office following re-election in 2018. She has served as Convener, Secretary and Member on various LAZ Committees, viz, International Relations, Conveyancing, In-house Counsel, Administration of Justice and Women’s Rights Committees, the last which she oversees as Council Member. Gertrude was part of the organizing Committee on the IBA African Regional Forum hosted by Zambia in November, 2015 and Committee member on the Papers Committee for the 2019 Commonwealth Law Conference. She has been on the Boards of Lusaka Water & Sewerage Company and Zambia Institute of Mass Communication Educational Trust Boards.
Her areas of expertise and practice include, inter alia, corporate and commercial law, banking and company law, employment/industrial relations, succession and inheritance, family law, privatization/investment law, civil litigation, contract law and conveyancing and Policy and Statutory Interpretation. She also assists with Board Secretarial function.
