Julian McMahon AC QC | Australia
Julian is a Senior Counsel in Australia, at the Melbourne Bar. His work is typical as a defense counsel in serious criminal matters, such as murder, terrorism, etc.
For 16 years, he has also been involved in Asia and elsewhere with death penalty work. He has acted for numerous Australians on death row including those who have been executed this century.
He is the President of an Australian NGO focussed solely on abolishing the death penalty regionally and internationally, utilising advocacy, casework and academic research. He is on the board of ADPAN (Anti Death Penalty Asia Network).
He has been a board member of various charities whose work is focussed on the very poor and marginalised.
For his work in the law, particularly with regard to death penalty work and related pro bono work, Julian has been made a Companion of the Order of Australia, AC in 2017; awarded the Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) from Australian Catholic University; been awarded the Law Council of Australia President’s medal in 2016; and in 2016 was the Victorian Australian of the Year.
